Our small alpaca herd is starting to produce some nice wool. While similar to sheep's wool, it is warmer, not prickly, and has no lanolin, which makes it hypoallergenic. Our alpacas are the Huacaya, an alpaca that grows soft spongy fiber, has natural crimp, thus making a natural elastic yarn well-suited for knitting.
We had our first shearing last year. Some of the fiber was made into rug yarn, which is spun around a cotton core to give it more strength. We also have fine wool for knitting and weaving. We hope in the future to offer hand woven shawls.
All the rugs are made using 100% alpaca yarn. All are hand woven here at the skete. Not all rugs are made using fiber from our alpacas.
Care Instructions: Do not launder. Spot clean with mild soap and water.
