Our Alpacas - 05/23/2017

The skete has a small alpaca herd!

Alpacas are kept in herds that graze on the level heights of the Andes of southern Peru, western Bolivia, Ecuador and northern Chile at an altitude of 3,500m - 5,000m (11,500-16,00 feet) above sea level, bred specifically for their fiber. Alpaca fiber is used for making knitted and woven items. While similar to shep's wool it is warmer, not prickly and has no lanolin.

We choose alpacas because of the amazing properties of the fiber, the ease of care, and the joy they give us and our visitors to be able to watch them out in the fields. Curious, gentle and peaceful they always welcome attention.
